CAMBRIDGE, Mass., and ATLANTA, May 1, 2006 – NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) and ThingMagic, Inc., a leading developer of radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies, today announced a reseller and support agreement for RFID technology. The agreement enables NCR to resell ThingMagic’s Mercury4™ RFID readers to NCR customers adopting RFID and to deliver support services to ThingMagic customers worldwide. NCR delivers end-to-end, global RFID solutions that help businesses solve real business problems. The NCR TransitionWorks™ portfolio of RFID solutions encompasses thoughtware, hardware, tags, services and software, including data warehouse solutions from Teradata, a division of NCR. “RFID is clearly advancing rapidly, moving from pilots to deployments, supported by the benefits of the EPCGlobal Generation 2 standard,” said NCR Vice President for Global RFID Solutions John Greaves. “NCR is staying ahead of market demands by delivering advanced, ‘future-proofed’ RFID technology. Combining our expertise with ThingMagic’s technology ensures NCR can continue to deliver practical, transitional RFID solutions, together with customized consulting and implementation services that meet customer business goals.” Mercury4 is certified by EPCglobal and MET Labs for all three Generation 2 RFID modes, including the complex Dense Reader mode. As a result, Mercury4 readers are readily and remotely updated for any future Generation 2 variants and other new RFID standards, ensuring that customers will have the latest RFID technology available. With its unique Software Defined Radio architecture, ThingMagic is the only RFID technology provider able to claim that its reader platform can read any RFID tag. “We’re already experiencing customer overlap between NCR and ThingMagic, so it’s critical that we work closely together on these RFID deployments,” said Kevin Ashton, vice president, marketing, for ThingMagic. “Now that NCR is reselling the Mercury reader platform, and we can offer NCR support services, retailers, manufacturers and consumer goods vendors can deploy RFID solutions effectively and benefit from supply-chain improvements and the Generation 2 standard that utilize more data at a faster rate.” Mercury4 readers will be featured in the NCR TransitionWorks Demonstration Center in Atlanta. Together with additional centers slated for Europe and Asia, the center is focused on providing NCR’s clients and partners an opportunity to learn about the possibilities, best practices and pitfalls associated with implementing RFID in their businesses. Achieve 100% Reads
"If a live tag was in the carton, the ThingMagic Mercury RFID readers caught it and achieved 100 percent read rates, with no misreading of any of the 13,500 RFID tags. In fact, we had some cartons with over 100 items, which we thought might result in RFID read errors due to high density and shielding of tags, but these, too, were read at 100 percent"
